Picking up the tennis racket for the first time at the tender age of 5, playing for fun a couple times a week, Ms. Kournikova soon took a more serious interest in the game and began to attend a professional academy. By 8, she was taking part in junior tournaments and a year later had the attention of major tennis scouts from all over the world. A few months passed and she was off to the United States to train at Nick Bollettieri’s acclaimed academy.
Fast forward a few years and Ms. Kournikova became prominent in the tennis scene. Crowned the International Tennis Federation under 18 Junior World Champion in 1995, she turned a Pro at age 14. Making her debut at the US Open Grand Slam Tournament in 1996 and reaching the fourth round she was on her way to establishing herself as a promising tennis star winning the Women’s Tennis Association Newcomer of the Year Award.
The following year, Kournikova reached the semifinals on her debut at Wimbledon Championships, the second woman in the history of the Women’s Tennis Association to do so.
While the years 1998 through 2000 were the most successful for her professionally, they also saw Ms. Kournikova’s meteoric rise to tabloid stardom. She had already been turning heads since her debut in the tennis world and causing men to flock the stands in droves just to marvel at her stunning looks, not her athletic talents mind you, when things were then taken to a completely new level.
Making way into the Top 20’s of Tennis ranks, she reached her first singles WTA Tour final, her second doubles WTA TOUR final and two repeated quarterfinals. Going on to win her first doubles Grand Slam title while in partnership with champion Martina Hingis in 1999, she ended her year ranked as world No.1 in doubles.
The year 2000 saw her reach a number of semifinals, quarterfinals and a final to finally break into the top ten ranks of singles, coming in at an impressive No. 8. That was the highlight of Anna Kournikova’s career as a Pro tennis player. The rest, from here on out, is downhill.
While injuries plagued and beleaguered Ms. Kournikova the following year, keeping her from mainstream tennis tournaments, her exotic appearance and raw sex appeal kept her in the limelight front and center. With endorsement deals to rival the biggest stars in the entertainment business, Anna was looked upon as the tennis Lolita. Magazine covers of different men publications to small cinematic roles to being named one of People’s 50 Most Beautiful People, she was everywhere. The cake, though, was her appearance in Enrique Iglesias’s music video for his hit song ‘Escape’. That opened the Pandora’s Box of speculation and gossip that surrounds Ms. Kournikova to the very day. While relatively successful in her come back to tennis in 2002 and 2003 winning her second Grand Slam title in a partnership with Martina Hingis again, she was riddled with either bad luck or bad playing and ultimately withdrew out of the tournament following a continuing back-injury.
Anna brought an end to her year and professional career as a Pro tennis player ranking in at No. 305 in singles and No. 176 in doubles in 2003.
Following her retirement of sorts, Ms. Kournikova began to be marked as the “most successful loser” in history of the tennis sport with statements that suggested that the marketing focus on her beauty, physicality and high-profile personal relationships had damagingly imposed on her performance as an athlete. Never having won a singles title, her popularity and rise to super stardom status was labeled as quick and easy — too easy.
The ranking criteria for her changed from Women’s Tennis Association’s positions in Singles or Doubles tournaments to top Google image searches for her revealing magazine covers, world’s sexiest women ranks, over-rated athlete ranks and biggest sports flops. Not only was Kournikova negatively viewed at for her blown out of water celebrity standing, she was the inspiration for a number of ridicule-worthy accolades in popular society. A Russian alcoholic drink, a computer virus named after her and a variation of a card game slang that equated to something that ‘looks great but never wins’, Anna Kournikova reached a new peak, in being mocked.
Today, Ms.Kournikova is known more for what she wears and how she styles herself along with the constant speculation that has always surrounded her personal life relationship than she ever was for her achievements in her professional career. As known to have said she, Anna Kournikova is beautiful, famous and gorgeous. And that’s about all she’s probably going to be remembered for.
